Which AI model should you use?

We can't tell you which model is cleverest. Nobody can, not in a way that survives contact with your own work. What we can do is narrow 55 of them down to the ones that hold enough text, cost what you're willing to pay, and are actually available today.

What we're filtering on, and what we're not

Price, context window, who made it and whether you can call it today. All published by the labs, all checkable on each model's own page.

Not quality. We run no benchmarks, and the public ones move every month without telling you much about your own job. The way to settle that is to take two models that both fit here and run your real work through them.

A rule of thumb that survives most cases

Start at the cheap end of this list, not the top. The gap between a small model and a flagship on ordinary work is usually smaller than the gap in the bill, which runs to hundreds of times across this table.

Move up when something breaks, and only for the work that broke it. Plenty of people run a cheap model for the bulk of a job and hand the hard tenth to an expensive one.
