The message
Something went wrong. Try again later. What it means
Google doesn't explain this line. In most threads it appears the moment someone opens a chat on gemini.google.com, only for one Google account, while the same account works in the mobile app.
What to do
Check the account against Google's sign-in requirements (age, work or school admin, Brand Account), fill in your first and last name, then send feedback from the mobile app with logs attached.
This one has no number after it. It fills the screen on gemini.google.com as soon as you try to start a chat:
Something went wrong. Try again later.
Google doesn't say what triggers it. The Gemini Apps Help Center has no page for it as of September 26, 2026, and nobody from Google has answered in the ten community threads I found with this exact line in the title (June 2025 to August 2026). I read all ten. What's below comes from them, and the people answering there are volunteer Product Experts who can't see your account.
The usual shape: one account, web only
Most of the posts I read are almost the same. The first one, from July 2025, came from a new personal account: clicking "chat with gemini" on a laptop threw the error in Chrome, Firefox and Edge, incognito included, but the Gemini mobile app worked with that account, and other accounts worked in the same browser. Later posters wrote the same thing, and a couple of them pasted it word for word.
That's worth testing first, because it tells you where to stop. If another account works on your computer, and yours works on your phone, clearing cookies won't touch it. One poster (who'd already tried a VPN check and a language change) moved to a second computer and got the same line. Another could use Gemini signed out, and it broke the moment they signed in.
Things that can block an account
Google does publish what you need to sign in: a personal account whose owner is 13 or older (or the local minimum age), a work account on a qualifying Workspace edition with a user who's 18 or older, or a school account the institution has turned on. (It's the closest thing to an official answer I could find.) Product Expert James M. pointed people with work or school accounts at their administrator.
The threads add a few more. I've only listed ones where a poster or a volunteer tied it to one account being refused:
- An account that was wrongly disabled and then reinstated. That poster said changing the name on their other affected account fixed it, though it didn't work the second time.
- A Brand Account (the extra profiles YouTube creates). Silver Product Expert Rhapsody in Blue wrote that "the Gemini desktop web interface rejects Brand Account profiles".
- A missing last name on the Google account. Rhapsody listed filling in both name fields; one poster had already checked that and it made no difference.
- Access from a country where Gemini isn't offered, through a VPN or proxy. One user's friend in mainland China got the line every time.
What people tried, and what came of it
Rhapsody's list, posted in August 2026, also included switching Web & App Activity off for two or three minutes and back on, and opening gemini.google.com/gems/create directly instead of the home page. The original poster replied "thank you this fix my problem" (without saying which step did it). The reinstated-account user tried the Gems page, and it didn't help them.
Sometimes it clears by itself. In September 2025 James M. posted that Google's support team "has reported the "Something Went Wrong" issue has been fixed", and someone in the July thread wrote back the next day that it was working. New reports kept coming in October.
When nothing works, the volunteers agree on where to go. Silver Product Expert Rob. put it plainly: people on the forum "do not have access to backend account data", and paying subscribers should contact Google One support. Everyone else can send feedback. Since the website's own menu may not load, send it from the mobile app on the same account and leave the system logs box ticked.
A different Gemini message looks similar but carries a number, like "Something went wrong (13)". Those show up mid-chat, and they have their own pages.
