Something went wrong (13)What it means
Google doesn't document what 13 means. In the threads we read, it usually stays with one Google account on every device and browser, and it's often tied to one kind of request, such as a photo upload or an image prompt.
What to do
Try the same prompt from a different Google account. If that works, send feedback from the failing account with system logs; on a work account behind a VPN, ask your IT admin.
This is the whole message, shown in place of a reply on the Gemini website and in the apps:
Something went wrong (13)
Google doesn't say what the 13 means. As of September 25, 2026 the Gemini Apps Help Center has nothing on it, and the answers in the Gemini Apps Community come from volunteer Product Experts, who can't see your account either. We read seven threads with this code in the title, from November 2025 to May 2026. The same few shapes kept coming back.
It follows the account
The clearest report is titled "only on my Gemini Pro account on all my devices". The poster got 13 on Chrome for Windows, an iPhone and an Android tablet, in incognito as well, on the Fast, Thinking and Pro models. Then they switched to a free account and it worked. Another AI Pro subscriber hit it "after typing only a few words", on desktop and mobile, in several browsers, and nothing they cleared made a difference.
That's the useful test. If a second Google account works on the same device, clearing cookies on that device isn't going to fix the first one.
Uploads and image prompts
A second group hit 13 on one type of request only. One poster got it every time they uploaded a photo and asked Gemini to analyze it. Another had it "for image gen only; text prompts still working" for over 16 hours, and a third got it whenever they attached a file or image, after trying a Drive upload, incognito and a phone on cellular data. The reverse happens too: the Pro-account poster above could still create images while plain chat failed.
Product Expert Fred SR's suggestions for the upload case were to switch from Pro to Flash and try the upload again, and to copy the image and paste it into the chat box instead of using the + button. Nobody in those threads came back to say whether it worked.
Work accounts and VPNs
In one thread Chrome and Edge both failed but an incognito window worked, and the poster's company required a VPN. Product Expert Rajat Patel pointed them at their IT admin, who can check whether Gemini is enabled for the account, and added that "it is possible that VPN is causing all these problems as I have seen many cases already."
Is 13 a gRPC code?
Fred SR wrote that 13 "typically points to an Internal Error or a gRPC-level failure". It's a reasonable guess. gRPC (the remote-call system much of Google runs on) numbers its status codes, and in its table 13 is INTERNAL, "reserved for serious errors". But Google has never said the Gemini app's number comes from that table, and we can't show that it does. One person saw 1076 on the web and 13 on the mobile app for the same stuck chat (the web code has its own page).
What to do
Try a different Google account first, then a different request type (text only, no attachment). If the problem stays with one account, send feedback from that account with a screenshot and system logs, since that's where every Product Expert in these threads sends people who've run out of local fixes.
Other lines the same feature prints
Match yours against these if the one at the top of the page is not quite it. They come from the same code and mean related things.
