Musk says AI roughly doubles US growth next year, but the Fed's 2027 median is 2.4%
His guess is about 4%. No participant on the Federal Open Market Committee put next year above 2.9%.
Elon Musk put a number on what AI does to the US economy on September 18, 2026. His guess: AI roughly doubles US GDP growth next year, from about 2% to about 4%.
Two days earlier, the people whose job that forecast is had published theirs. The Federal Open Market Committee's median projection for 2027 came in at 2.4%.

What the Fed's own table says
The committee met on September 15-16, 2026, and each participant submitted a projection running through 2029. For 2027 the median landed at 2.4%, with the full range across participants running from 2.0 to 2.9.

The rest of that line runs downhill. Median growth goes 2.3% this year, 2.4% next, then 2.2% and 2.1%, with the longer-run rate at 2.0%. No projection anywhere in the table goes above 2.9% in any year.
So the most optimistic person in that room sits more than a percentage point under Musk. Granted, the committee publishes a projection and Musk posted a guess, and he wrote it as one.
He hedged the number himself, which is the bit that tends to fall away once it reaches a headline.
My guess is that AI roughly doubles US GDP growth next year from ~2% to ~4%. Maybe even more.
Where his starting point comes from
The ~2% he doubles from is close to the Fed's own idea of an ordinary year. Participants put the longer-run growth rate at 2.0% and this year's median at 2.3%, so the disagreement sits entirely in the second number.
The Fed's table has no line for AI. Participants project growth, unemployment and two measures of inflation, and whatever they believe AI does to productivity already sits inside those figures rather than beside them. Musk's post runs to two sentences and gives no mechanism, so there's nothing in it to lay against the table.
How far apart they really are
Less far than the medians make it look. The same document says that, going by how wrong these projections have been in the past, there's about a 70 percent probability that real GDP growth in the second year comes in between 1.2 and 4.8 percent (the band for the current year is 1.6 to 4.4). Musk's 4% sits inside it.
