Musk says he'll give one of his SpaceX shares to every kid in America next year

He made the pledge in one X post overnight, about 12 hours after telling Anthropic to hand its shares straight to the public.

On October 19, 2026, at 3:52 am Eastern, Elon Musk posted on X that he'll give one of his own SpaceX shares to every kid in America next year. He called it the first of many such gifts.

The post came about 12 hours after Anthropic announced its Anthropic Public Benefit Fund on October 18. Musk had replied to Anthropic's announcement that afternoon with one line: "I recommend giving the shares directly to the public."

Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.

That's all of it. Musk didn't say how the shares would reach children, which children count, or whether he'll use an existing account system or build one. He gave a year and nothing more.

Two ways to give away a company

Musk's pledge is easiest to read against what he was answering.

Anthropic's fund starts with 5% of the company's shares, subject to stockholder approval, and the board can add 2% more for every 50% rise in the company's value above a baseline. The fund is a wholly-owned LLC. Anthropic lists large donations to nonprofits and "direct distributions to specific populations" as things it might do, and names AI's effect on workers as one example. It hasn't named a program yet.

So the two plans differ on who holds the shares in the meantime. Anthropic keeps them in an entity it owns and decides later where they go. Musk says his go straight to people, out of his own holding (he wrote "my SpaceX shares"), with no fund in between. Neither has said yet how many people get what, or when.

Who cheered, and who doubted it

The replies split fast, and mostly along the lines you'd expect. Michael Dell posted the warmest one, about five hours after the pledge.

This is tremendous news for America's children. An entire generation will grow up as SpaceX owners. Well done @elonmusk ! 🇺🇸

Eric Balchunas called stock gifts to children with investment accounts "the way" and said, having looked into it, he thinks it's powerful. He also expected people to spin it as bad.

The doubters went to Musk's record. Melanie D'Arrigo brought up a promise from his government work.

He also promised $5000 DOGE refund checks. How’d that work out for everyone?

Fred Lambert said good for Musk if he does it, but he doubts it, and asked whether Musk ever fixed Flint's water as he'd offered. Lambert's guess is that Musk won't follow through and will blame Democrats.

What a share in a child's name could mean

There's already a federal account that a gift like this could land in. The IRS says the Working Families Tax Cuts let parents and guardians open a new type of individual retirement account for a child, called a Trump Account.

It features a pilot program contribution of $1,000 for children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, and who are U.S. citizens with a valid Social Security number.

From Trump Accounts | Internal Revenue Service

A child qualifies if they haven't turned 18 by the end of the year the election is made and has a valid Social Security number, and a parent signs them up by filing Form 4547 through an IRS account. Musk didn't mention these accounts. If he did use them, a child whose parents never filed the form wouldn't have an account for a share to go into, which is one practical reason "every kid" is harder than it sounds.

The IRS rules also show where a gift could get stuck. The $1,000 government deposit only goes to children born from 2025 through 2028, while Musk's "every kid" would reach teenagers who never got one. For them, a share would be the first thing in the account, if a parent opens it.

I think one share matters less as money than as a stake: a child would own a small piece of the company Musk runs, and could follow how it does. That's my reading. Musk's post doesn't make that case, and he hasn't said whether the shares could be sold or must be held.

What happens next

Musk set 2027 as the year, with no month. Anthropic says it will publish the fund's structure and governance, including the valuation milestones behind the extra 2%, in the coming months.
