What AI model does Snapchat My AI use?

My AI is the chatbot pinned inside Snapchat, and plenty of people still call it "ChatGPT in Snapchat". That was accurate in early 2023. Snap's current help page says something broader.

What Snap's help center says now

The sentence is short: "My AI is powered by Large Language Models like GPT models from OpenAI and Gemini models from Google and has been trained on a diverse range of texts, with additional safety enhancements and controls unique to Snapchat." So two outside companies' models, plus Snap's own filtering on top. It names no versions.

That "like" is doing some work. It lists examples rather than a closed set, and nothing on the page says which model answers which message.

OpenAI first, then Google

When Snap launched My AI on February 27, 2023, it described "a new chatbot running the latest version of OpenAI's GPT technology that we've customized for Snapchat." At first it was only for paying Snapchat+ subscribers.

Google came in on September 24, 2024. Snap's newsroom post said it would "leverage the strong multimodal capabilities of Gemini on Vertex AI" (multimodal meaning it handles images, video and audio as well as text, and Vertex AI being Google Cloud's AI service). Snap credited the change with a jump in people sending photos to the bot: "over 2.5x as much engagement within Snapping to My AI in the United States."

The Perplexity deal that ended

In November 2025 Snap announced a partnership to put Perplexity's answer engine into Chat. It was meant to sit next to My AI; Snap's announcement said "Snapchatters will still be able to chat with the existing My AI chatbot." It didn't last. Snap's investor letter for the first quarter of 2026 says its forecast "assumes no contribution from Perplexity as we amicably ended the relationship in Q1."

What Snap doesn't say

Which GPT and Gemini versions run My AI, how chats are split between them, and whether Snapchat+ subscribers get a different model from everyone else. There's also no word on whether any model Snap built itself answers in the chat.
