Something went wrong (1097)
The message
Something went wrong (1097)What it means
Google hasn't said what code 1097 means. Every report we read that named the account type came from a work or school (Google Workspace) account, and Google Workspace support told one admin in May 2026 that it was a global issue engineering was working on.
What to do
Check whether a personal account works on the same machine. If only the Workspace account fails, have your admin confirm Gemini is on for your organizational unit, then open a ticket with Workspace support and send feedback from Gemini.
This is what the Gemini app shows in place of a reply:
Something went wrong (1097)
Google doesn't document what the number means, and as of September 25, 2026 the Gemini Apps Help Center doesn't mention it. What we have is five threads in the Gemini Apps Community, and they tell a fairly consistent story, which is more than most of these codes get.
Who gets 1097
Every 1097 thread that said what kind of account was involved was about a Google Workspace account (a work or school account run by an organization's admin). The plans named in the threads run from Business Starter through Business Standard to Enterprise Plus. One admin set up a new user on May 11 with the same organizational unit and license as colleagues whose Gemini worked, and the new account still failed on a laptop that worked for others.
The most useful thread is from a Workspace Enterprise Plus admin. The first report from their users came on May 13, 2026. The admin's own account was fine. Two brand new test accounts both got 1097, so it wasn't one broken profile.
What Google support said
That admin contacted Google Workspace support on May 14. They wrote that the agent said "their engineering team has been made aware of this error, and that they are already working on it", and asked for a screen recording and a HAR file (a browser export of the network traffic). A follow-up got this, which the admin quoted: "as it is Global issue and impacting the users all over the globe". The agent also said credits could be looked at for the Workspace account once it was fixed, though not for API usage.
Product Expert Fred SR (a volunteer, not Google staff) replied on May 17 that "Google engineering is actively investigating this as a global system error", so local troubleshooting might not help. He and another regular both describe it as failing on the second message of a chat and not saving the chat history. We couldn't confirm that detail anywhere else, so treat it as their summary.
It didn't end in May. A Business Standard customer was still getting 1097 "very often" in July, with Gemini switched on and incognito already tried.
What's worth doing
- Sign in to Gemini with a personal Google account on the same computer. If that works and the work account doesn't, you're looking at this bug (or an admin setting), and clearing your cache won't help.
- If the account is new, give it 48 hours. Several answerers mention that license and Gemini permissions can take that long to reach a fresh account.
- Ask your admin to check Admin console, Apps, Google Workspace, Gemini, and confirm the service is on for your organizational unit.
- Have the admin open a Workspace support ticket. That's the route that got an answer from Google in the thread above (and the one that raised credits).
Send feedback from Gemini as well: Settings & help, then Send feedback, with a screenshot. One person also found that pressing "try again" on the previous prompt and then sending a new one got things moving, which is cheap to try while you wait.

Match yours against these if the one at the top of the page is not quite it. They come from the same code and mean related things.
