Cursor shows this under a Model not available heading when you send a chat to a model you aren't allowed to reach from where you are:

It started showing up in bulk on July 16, 2025, mostly for Claude users in mainland China. That thread on the Cursor forum now has 176 posts and 32,470 views (as of September 26, 2026), and Hong Kong users joined it on April 8, 2026 when it reached them too. The regions page it points to now lives at cursor.com/docs/account/regions.

Why Cursor says the provider doesn't serve your region

Cursor doesn't run Claude, GPT or Gemini itself. It passes your request to Anthropic, OpenAI or Google, and each of them publishes a list of countries its API supports. A Cursor developer put it plainly on the day it started: "Cursor's model routing respects the availability regions set by the underlying model providers." If you're outside a provider's list, its models are off for you.

Cursor's regions page says the same. The restrictions come from "the terms and policies set by the model providers", and Cursor says it will switch models back on wherever a provider allows it. In February 2026 a staff reply added that "Anthropic and OpenAI don't serve some regions". It isn't a ban on your account, and paying for Pro or Ultra doesn't lift it.

Which models still work

Everything the provider allows. The docs say blocked models "won't appear in Cursor" and that Auto (the setting that picks a model for you) "will choose an available model for each request". In February 2026 staff listed Grok Code, Kimi K2, Composer 1 and the two DeepSeek models as working without a key (that list will have moved on since, so trust what your own model picker shows).

You can also add your own API key in Cursor Settings > Models. That only helps if the provider sells API access where you are: the docs warn that "if the provider blocks your region, calls may still fail even with your own key."

When you're in a supported country and still see it

If you're on a VPN or proxy, Cursor staff have called this "a known issue when using a VPN". Their steps from January 7, 2026, which the person asking confirmed worked the next day:

• Set the VPN to Global Mode, so all traffic goes through it rather than only some apps.
• Open settings (Ctrl or Cmd plus comma), search for HTTP/2 and turn on "Disable HTTP/2".
• Restart Cursor, then run Cursor Settings > Network > Run Diagnostics.
• If the VPN has a TUN mode (a virtual network card that catches every connection on the machine), switch it on.

One user in the big thread fixed it by enabling TUN back in July 2025. Before you change anything, check that the provider supports the country you're actually in. The lists are on Anthropic's, OpenAI's and Google's own sites, linked from Cursor's regions page.

Refunds

When the block first landed, Cursor staff said affected users could "self-serve a refund for your current billing month" on cursor.com or ask at hi@cursor.com. One person in the thread wrote that they got account credit instead of cash. As of April 2026 staff say region and billing questions go to hi@cursor.com, because the forum team can't handle billing.
