The message

Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond to your message. Please try again soon.
Claude app as of October 1, 2026 read October 1, 2026ClaudeClaude appcapacity

What it means

Claude's servers are busy across all users, so your message wasn't answered. Anthropic calls this load management and says it clears within minutes.

What to do

Wait a few minutes and send the message again. If it keeps happening for much longer, check status.claude.com for a real incident.

You send a message in the Claude app or on claude.ai, and in place of an answer you get this line:

Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond to your message. Please try again soon.

It's still a live message. Anthropic lists it word for word on its Troubleshoot Claude error messages page, which we read on October 1, 2026 (Anthropic last updated it on May 18).

What Anthropic says it means

The help page puts it down to demand. In Anthropic's words, capacity issues "occur when Claude's infrastructure experiences high demand system-wide." Lots of people are asking Claude things at the same moment, and yours got turned away.

Anthropic is firm on this point: "Capacity constraints are not outages. The system is functioning normally but managing high demand across all users." The page says these spells are temporary and "typically resolve as demand patterns shift throughout the day."

Why the status page still says everything is fine

This is the part that confuses people. You hit the error, open status.claude.com, and see nothing wrong. That's by design. The help page says capacity issues "will not appear on our status page because they represent normal load management rather than technical problems."

The status page is for what Anthropic calls service incidents, meaning disruptions where Claude "is unavailable or significantly degraded for all or most users." So a green status page and this message can happen at the same time (that's normal, by Anthropic's own account).

What to do about it

Anthropic's advice is short: "try again in a few minutes." There's nothing to change in your settings or your prompt first.

If it keeps failing well past a few minutes, look at the status page again. A capacity message that won't go away can sit inside a real outage. On June 2, 2026, The National reported that users could log in but got no replies at all. They first saw "A bit longer, thanks for your patience" and then, after about three minutes, this same capacity line. Anthropic said it was aware of the problem and working on a fix.

How it differs from the other Claude limits

This one is about Anthropic's servers. If you've used up your own allowance you'll see a different line, such as "5-hour limit reached - resets [time]", which gives you a time to come back. If the chat itself has grown too big, the message talks about the length limit (starting a new conversation fixes that one). The capacity message gives no reset time because there isn't one: it lifts when demand drops.

Other lines the same feature prints

Match yours against these if the one at the top of the page is not quite it. They come from the same code and mean related things.
