OpenAI paused the $200 ChatGPT tier. Per Astra message, it was the cheap one.
Two hundred dollars a month bought four times the Astra allowance of the hundred-dollar plan, which is the arithmetic behind the pause.
On September 10, 2026, OpenAI stopped selling its most expensive consumer plan. You can still pay $100 a month for ChatGPT Pro. You can't pay $200.
The reason given was demand for GPT-6 Astra, which shipped a week earlier. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads product on ChatGPT and Codex, wrote on X that demand was "really unprecedented" and called the pause "the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible."
On OpenAI's own published numbers, the $200 plan is the cheap one. That's why it closed.
What's blocked
New sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 tier, which OpenAI calls Pro 20X. Existing subscribers keep everything. The $100 plan, Plus, Go, Free, Business, Enterprise and the API all kept selling.
One trap if you're already on it. Reporting on the pause says canceling or downgrading while it's in force costs you the right to re-subscribe until it lifts, and there's no end date.
Why that tier and not the $100 one
OpenAI publishes the allowances. Astra reaches the ordinary chat window as GPT-6 Pro, and as of September 11, 2026:
- Pro $200: 200 messages a week.
- Pro $100: 50 a week, shared with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro.
- Business Premium: 50 a week. Business Standard: 15 a month.
- Plus: none in Chat, only inside ChatGPT Work and Codex.
Double the price, four times the messages. That's roughly 23 cents per Astra message on the $200 plan against 46 cents on the $100 one.
So the expensive-sounding tier was the discount counter. Shutting it stops new people buying at half price without moving anyone who already had.
What that buys at list price
Our price table has Astra at $10 per million tokens in and $50 out. Spread $200 across 867 messages a month and each one has about 4,600 output tokens in it before a subscriber costs more than they pay. List price isn't OpenAI's cost, so read that as a ceiling.
Astra's headline feature is computer use, and a model driving a desktop reads the screen over and over. One task clicking through six pages passes 4,600 tokens inside a single message. The allowance counts messages. The bill counts tokens.
A Pro plan was never unlimited
The help center says it outright: a Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of GPT-6 Pro. Hit the weekly ceiling on the $200 plan and ChatGPT quietly drops you to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium.
About those reported limit cuts
A second story is going around, that Astra's limits were cut fourfold after launch week. I went looking for the source and it thins out fast: one early-September report, labeled an estimate there, and no before-and-after from OpenAI.
The help center page carries the real allowances, and it said it had been updated an hour before I read it. Check that, rather than a screenshot from last week.
In 2023, the last time OpenAI paused sign-ups, the tier it closed was the cheapest way in. This time it's the most expensive plan on the menu, closed for being too good a deal.

When will OpenAI reopen the $200 ChatGPT Pro tier?
No date. OpenAI says it's adding capacity and that the pause is temporary, which is all it has said. The one precedent: Plus sign-ups were paused on November 15, 2023 and turned back on December 13, about four weeks later, once the company had found more GPUs. That was a $20 plan, so treat four weeks as a data point and watch the upgrade screen in your own account.
Can I still subscribe to ChatGPT Pro at all?
Yes, at $100. Only the $200 tier is closed to new sign-ups and upgrades.
Does the pause affect my existing $200 subscription?
No. Accounts already on it keep the plan and the allowances.
