Anthropic is hiring a lead to brief 2028 presidential candidates in both parties on AI
The company wants a Washington lead to brief every serious 2028 candidate, in both parties, on AI policy.
Anthropic wants someone to run a "presidential engagement program for the 2028 cycle." That's from a job listing on its careers board, still up on October 9, 2026, for a Political Programs Lead in Washington who'd size up both parties' likely fields and brief the candidates and their advisers on AI policy.
It pays $295,000 to $345,000.
- Role
- Political Programs Lead
- Where
- Washington, DC
- Salary
- $295,000 - $345,000 USD
- Preferred experience
- 12+ years in campaigns, party committees, political organizations
What the job involves
Presidential work is first on the list. Whoever's hired would offer candidates AI policy education "on equal terms" (so Republicans and Democrats get the same briefing), coach Anthropic's executives before they sit down with them, and plan for the platform fights, the conventions and the transition.
That's one job of many. They'd also court down-ballot candidates, set up grassroots organizing on AI policy in priority states, and run the company's political giving, employee-funded PAC included.
Decisions made over the next two years will shape the future enormously. We want every serious candidate and elected official, in both parties, to understand the technology and the case for governing it well.
According to the listing, they'd report to the head of Political Programs, Campaigns & Coalitions, who sets political strategy with company leadership. Anthropic describes its political activity as "bipartisan, disclosed, and governed by written criteria with oversight", and says it and its PACs support candidates in both parties who are committed to safe AI development and democratic governance.
The money already spent
Anthropic's been funding AI politics all year. In July it gave another $20 million to Public First Action, an AI policy group, which took its total to $40 million. None of that can go toward getting anyone elected, Anthropic says. I'd note the new job sits much closer to the candidates than a donation to a policy group does.
We need policymakers and candidates to put forward measures that mitigate risks.
And it's said what it wants them to back. Governments, in Anthropic's view, should be able to check companies' safety claims, fine them, and slow or block a model that risks catastrophic harm. It also wants tighter chip export controls.
Not everyone in Washington is receptive. Senator Bernie Moreno told Dario Amodei to drop the alarmist AI talk, as we reported on October 6. The listing gives no start date.
