GitHub Copilot weekly limits: the allowance is monthly AI credits since June 2026

GitHub's docs don't describe a weekly Copilot cap. Individual plans get a monthly AI credit allowance that resets on the 1st at 00:00 UTC: 1,500 on Pro, 7,000 on Pro+ and 20,000 on Max, plus short rate limits.

Checked against the lab's own pages on September 25, 2026. Limits change often, so the date matters.

People search for Copilot's weekly limits, but GitHub's billing docs for individuals describe a monthly allowance. Since June 1, 2026 Copilot usage is measured in GitHub AI Credits, and every plan gets a set number of them each month. One AI credit is $0.01.

Monthly, and it doesn't roll over

The allowance resets at midnight UTC on the first of each calendar month, whatever your billing date is. Unused credits are forfeited. Each paid plan's total is base credits, which match the subscription price, plus a flex allotment on top that GitHub says can change as model pricing moves (Pro is 1,000 base and 500 flex, for example).

Credits go on Copilot Chat, the CLI, the cloud agent, Spaces, Spark and third-party coding agents. Code completions and next edit suggestions aren't billed in credits at all. How fast you spend them depends on the model and how many tokens a task uses, so a long agent session on a frontier model costs far more than a quick chat question.

The limits that feel weekly

The other thing that stops you is a rate limit. GitHub's usage-limits page calls these temporary and says waiting a short period usually clears them. That's the closest the docs come to a short window, and there's no weekly number on it.

If you're still on an annual Pro or Pro+ plan from before June 1, 2026, you're on the old premium requests instead: a fixed number per month, with model multipliers, also resetting on the 1st at 00:00:00 UTC.

When the credits run out

Upgrade (you pay only the price difference), set a budget for additional usage in dollars, or wait for the monthly reset. Paid plans get a 10% discount on model costs when you use auto model selection. All of this was read on September 25, 2026.
