ChatGPT message limit per hour: what OpenAI actually publishes for each plan
OpenAI's help pages don't give an hourly message cap for any plan. Free and Go get unlimited everyday text chats, and the published caps are on Pro models: 200 GPT-6 Pro messages a week on Pro $200, 50 on Pro $100.

People still search for ChatGPT's message limit per hour. I read OpenAI's current help pages for Free and for the GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Pro models, and none of them gives an hourly cap for any plan. What they print instead is a mix of unlimited, per day, per week and per month.

Free and Go: unlimited, with side limits
The Free tier FAQ says free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. The limits sit on the tools instead: file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis each have their own, and ChatGPT tells you when you hit one. Upgrading resets a Free account's rate limits, according to the same FAQ.

Where the real caps are
The hard numbers are on the Pro models. On Pro $200, GPT-6 Pro gets 200 messages a week in Chat, GPT-5.6 Sol Pro gets a separate 170 a day, and the two together can't go past 200 a day. Pro $100 shares 50 a week across both. Business Standard gets 15 a month and Business Premium 50 a week, shared the same way.
Thinking at Medium, High or Extra High has limits too, but OpenAI doesn't print a number for them. When you reach one, ChatGPT may carry on with another model and shows the reset time when it has it. Plus sits in that unnumbered group (Plus doesn't get GPT-6 Pro in Chat at all, only GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex).
If you keep getting stopped
OpenAI's pages print no hourly number as of September 25, 2026. If you're being stopped after a burst of messages, it's the model's allowance, a tool limit or a temporary usage restriction from OpenAI's misuse safeguards, which ChatGPT says it'll notify you about.
