Which one should you be using?
GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna all shipped on 2026-07-09, which makes them the newest in the family between them. Newer is not automatically better for your job, but it is usually the one the lab is optimising, and on this table it is rarely the most expensive.
Why there are so many numbers
A point release is a new model, not a patch. OpenAI ships a new one under the same family name when the training or the tuning changes, and the old one usually keeps working at its old price until it's deprecated.
That's why two models in this table can hold the same amount of text and cost different amounts. You're picking a specific model, not a family, and the API name in each model's page is what actually goes in your code.
What each one is for
- GPT-5.6 TerraHalf the input price of Sol on the same million-token window. Worth a try before you reach for the flagship.
- GPT-5.6 SolThe one most people are actually calling while Astra rolls out. OpenAI says the promotional price holds until at least 21 November 2026.
- GPT-5.6 LunaTwenty cents a million in. This is the one to point your bulk classification and extraction jobs at.
- GPT-5.5April's flagship. It costs more than Sol and does less, which is what happens when a lab ships twice in a quarter.
- GPT-5.4 nanoSame input price as Luna with a smaller window and a smaller model behind it.
- GPT-5.4 MiniThe mid-size option on a 400K window. Luna undercuts it heavily, so read both prices before you pick.
- GPT-5.4March's flagship, still up and still cheaper than GPT-5.5. OpenAI's own catalogue blurbs haven't caught up with the 5.6 line.
- GPT-5.3-CodexThe last Codex model still standing. Every earlier one in that line was shut down on 23 July 2026.
- GPT-5.2December's flagship, still callable. Its chat variant was shut down in August; the base model wasn't.
- GPT-5.1Cheaper than everything newer except the small models, and it's still the model OpenAI's own docs describe as best for coding. Read that as stale copy, not a recommendation.
- GPT-5Shuts down on 11 December 2026, along with GPT-5 Mini and nano. If you pinned to it a year ago, that's your deadline.
- GPT-5.5 ProSix times the price of GPT-5.5 for the reasoning-heavy end. Check it actually beats Sol on your evals before you commit a budget to it.
