Plan limits

How many GPT-6 Sol messages do you get in Codex and ChatGPT Work?

OpenAI estimates 15 to 150 GPT-6 Sol local messages every five hours on Plus, 70 to 700 on Pro 5x and 300 to 3,000 on Pro 20x, shared between Codex and ChatGPT Work.

Checked against the lab's own pages on September 24, 2026. Limits change often, so the date matters.

OpenAI's Codex pricing page puts GPT-6 Sol at 15 to 150 local messages every five hours on ChatGPT Plus. Pro 5x gets 70 to 700 and Pro 20x gets 300 to 3,000. The same allowance covers ChatGPT Work, because OpenAI says Work inside ChatGPT uses the same pricing, credits and usage limits as Codex.

The ranges are wide on purpose. OpenAI calls them estimates. The real count depends on how big and complex the task is, and on whether it runs locally or in the cloud.

Plus
15-150 local messages per five-hour period
Pro 5x
70-700
Pro 20x
300-3,000
Standard Business
15-150
Credits
50 credits per 1M input tokens, 250 credits per 1M output tokens
Fast mode
2.5x the Standard credit rate

Is Sol a cut from GPT-5.6 Sol?

OpenAI's own table says no. GPT-5.6 Sol is listed at 10 to 100 local messages on Plus, so GPT-6 Sol's 15 to 150 is a higher range at both ends. The credit rate is lower too: GPT-6 Sol costs 50 credits per million input tokens where GPT-5.6 Sol costs 100.

One thing can make it feel smaller, though. Cloud chats on ChatGPT plans still use GPT-5.6 Sol, and OpenAI says they may use more of your allowance than local messages. Local messages and cloud chats share one allowance, and weekly limits may also apply.

Tasks that look similar can consume different amounts of your allowance.

What else eats into it

Fast mode uses 2.5x the Standard credit rate for GPT-6 Sol, so it runs through included limits faster. Image generation uses them about 3 to 5 times faster on average. Big AGENTS.md files and every MCP server you leave switched on add context to each message, and OpenAI suggests trimming both.

Your live numbers are in the usage dashboard, and the /status command shows what's left during a Codex CLI session. OpenAI tells you to check that dashboard for current limits and reset times rather than rely on the table.

When you run out

If you hit the limit partway through a turn, the agent can finish that turn, subject to fair use limits. After that, Plus and Pro users can buy credits and keep working without upgrading, and anyone can run extra local chats on an API key at API rates. Our page on what happens when you hit your limit covers how credits work, and the API side is on GPT-6 Sol and Luna API rate limits.

Sol starts at Plus. The Free and Go plans list only GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout. These numbers were read on September 24, 2026.
