- Model
- The thing that does the work, like GPT-6 or Claude Opus 5. Labs ship new ones constantly and give them version numbers, so "3.8" is a different model from "3.5", not a patch of it.
- Token
- How the labs count text for billing. Roughly three quarters of a word in English, so 1,000 words costs you about 1,333 tokens.
- Context window
- How much text a model can hold in its head at once, counted in tokens. A big window is what lets you paste a whole book in and ask about it.
- API
- The way a program talks to a model, as opposed to you typing into a chat box. It's billed per token, and it's a separate product from the monthly chat subscription.
- Deprecation
- A lab announcing that a model will stop working on a given date. If you built something on it, that date is your deadline.

Sep 10 , 15:54 UTC Identified - A Windows update released September 8 has left Claude Cowork on Windows unable to run local commands, because its workspace can no longer reach your computer's drive. For most users, chat and file reading and editing still work. There's no in-app workaround yet, and restarting or reinstalling won't help. Microsoft has developed a fix and is working to release it.
